Sump Pump Failed and the Basement Flooded: What to Do Tonight

Sump pumps usually fail at the worst time: heavy rain, spring melt, or a power outage.

Right now

  1. Stay out of standing water if outlets or cords are near it. Shut off power to the basement at the panel if you can do it safely from a dry spot.
  2. Check the pump. Is it plugged in? Is the breaker tripped? Is the float stuck?
  3. If you have a backup or spare pump, get it running.
  4. Move what you can off the floor and take photos for your insurance company.

Don't

  • Pull up wet carpet yourself before someone looks at it
  • Run a regular household fan and call it dry
  • Wait until morning if water is still coming in

After

Carpet pad, drywall and insulation that got wet usually need to come out. Framing and subfloor need to be dried and checked with a moisture meter. The first 24 to 48 hours matter most for mold.
